Atalaya Scouting Visit - July 2018

When we arrived at Atalaya, we were surprised by this charming, seemingly completed church.   What we didn't realize was that the 25-year-old roof was rotted through, and doing damage to the rest of the finished interior.  It was disclosed at some point that the original roof never had actual shingles, but instead the builders had used tar-paper, which lasted a year or so before needing replacement.  The church had replaced the tar-paper a number of times over the years, but it never did the job asphalt shingles can do, so the pictures below will show you the result.

In our first brief inspection, we toyed with the idea of simply reinforcing the structure that was already in place.  As it turned out, a complete tear-off and replacement was necessary.   Given the damage that was happening to the finished building, this location became our top priority, and we completed the work in November 2019.
