Atalaya 2019 - Roof Disaster
From the inside of the church, it's not such a pretty picture. Prior to leaving
Juarez, I had discovered a potential budget issue, since materials in Mexico cost a
significantly more than materials just over the border in El Paso. Yes, we had
received a huge donation in shingles, but the handling and transport of those shingles
used about the same budget as buying shingles for this project down south. Of
course we have shingles now for the next few projects, at least, but for this project,
the budget was a break even. So, before leaving, it was up in the air whether we
would have funds available to rebuild the roof entirely, or if we could use some of the
structure that was there, and just redo the sheeting and shingles. Obviously, when
we arrived and viewed the condition, the answer was obvious - we had to start from
scratch. We were able to reuse the sill plates, which was nice, and we also came
across a lumber yard in Torreon' that was willing to work with us a little on the price.
